Faculty Position in Theoretical High Energy Physics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of theoretical high energy physics. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2020.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy (https://www.uvic.ca/physics) is a diverse research-intensive unit that is dedicated to providing outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs and fosters a collegial and collaborative environment. The Department has strong research efforts in particle and accelerator physics, astronomy and astrophysics, condensed matter physics, medical physics and ocean physics. The Department’s Particle Theory Group forms part of Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA), comprising nine faculty, two IPP Research Scientists, and adjunct faculty at the TRIUMF Laboratory. The Particle Theory Group maintains leading research programs in particle theory in and beyond the Standard Model, astroparticle phenomenology and cosmology, formal particle theory, strongly interacting matter, holography, and hydrodynamics. Requirements

The successful candidate must have a PhD in theoretical high energy physics or equivalent, and postdoctoral or equivalent experience is desirable. They will be responsible for developing an independent and externally funded research program of international caliber, in an area that will enhance and/or complement the strengths of the UVic Particle Theory Research Group, and for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will also share in the administrative responsibilities of the department, play an active role in the advising and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to the collaborative, collegial and inclusive atmosphere of the department.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research and teaching. Excellence in research is evidenced by peer reviewed publications/contributions of high impact and strong endorsements by referees of international standing. Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by communications skills, a statement on teaching submitted as part of the application, recommendation letters and a colloquium delivered during the on-site interview.
