Job description:
The School of Mathematics and Physics at The University of Queensland (UQ) invites applications for PhD scholarships in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics.

One position is funded by UQ’s graduate school to support the “Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship” project grant “Supersymmetry and Supergravity: New Approaches and Applications” awarded to Dr. Gabriele Tartaglino-Mazzucchelli who has recently joined the University of Queensland.
This project will strengthen UQ’s profile in theoretical and mathematical physics of fundamental interaction also in contact with other research groups in Australia, Europe and the USA.
A second PhD position can be funded directly from this grant to strong candidates.
UQ’s graduate school also offers several other opportunities to potential Australian and International PhD students with various calls for scholarship applications every year.

The scholarship consists of tuition fees, a living stipend and Overseas Student Health Cover (for international applicants). The current stipend is valued at AU$28,092 per annum (2020) for 3 years, with two possible six-month extensions, and is subject to UQ's HDR admissions and scholarship policy requirements.
Candidates have to meet the minimum level of academic achievement and English language proficiency requirements indicated by UQ’s graduate school. Information can be found at the following links:

Travel support and access to extra funding will also be available to the students.

Preferred candidates should have a background in Theoretical and/or Mathematical Physics of fundamental interactions and possess good knowledge of quantum field theory and General Relativity but applications from candidates with a broader background are welcome.
Prior knowledge of supersymmetry, supergravity and topics related to string theory would be advantageous.

Successful candidates will work in close contact with the Mathematical Physics group at UQ and also benefit from the presence of leading Australian groups in research in cosmology and quantum science.
Information about the School of Mathematics and Physics can be found here:

The School is located in St Lucia, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

To be considered, applicants are first required to provide the following documents:

  • CV including a list of publications (if any);
  • Academic transcript with full list of courses and grades;
  • A statement of research interests of less than two pages;
  • Masters/Honours thesis (if already available);
  • Two letters of recommendation sent via email directly by the referees;
  • Proof of English language proficiency as required by UQ’s graduate school (see links above).

The documents need to be sent by email to Dr. Gabriele Tartaglino-Mazzucchelli at the address:

The review of the applications will start after the 19th of December 2019 but earlier applications are preferred. Shortly after this first deadline, the selected candidate(s) will be contacted to prepare internal documents that will need to be reviewed by the graduate school at UQ with an internal deadline early January 2020. After these dates, the positions will remain open until filled and interested candidates are encouraged to send applications at any time in the future.

Starting dates for the positions can be negotiated and, for international candidates, might depend on VISAs processing times. One position is preferred to start asap and no later than October 1st 2020.
