Deadline on Jan 31, 2020
Job description:
The ATLAS group at UC Berkeley seeks applications for a position as a postdoctoral scholar to work on physics analysis (50%) and the development of novel tracking algorithms for high-energy physics experiments (50%) with an expected start date of February 1, 2020 or later.

The track reconstruction algorithm development will be performed within the context of A Common Track Software (ACTS) project, which is a project to develop a detector-independent track reconstruction toolkit based on the track reconstruction tools used by the ATLAS experiment. In addition, the postdoctoral scholar will be expected to contribute to the integration and testing of the ACTS framework within the ATLAS Athena framework.

The analysis program currently focuses on physics using charm quarks. Possible focus areas include measurements of W+charm and Z+charm cross-sections, measurements of gluon splitting to charm quarks, fits to extract the strange quark PDF, searches for the decay of the Higgs boson to charm quarks and the development of algorithms to tag charm jets. The postdoctoral scholar will work with Professor Heather Gray and the other members of the Berkeley/LBNL ATLAS group.

The chosen candidate will perform physics analysis with data from the ATLAS experiment, develop track reconstruction algorithms for the HL-LHC within the ACTS project, commission track reconstructions with ACTS in ATLAS, collaborate with members of the ATLAS experiment, prepare research papers for publication, and present research findings at seminars, conferences.

Basic qualifications:
PhD or equivalent international degree in High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, or Computer Science is required by the start date.

Additional qualifications:
  • Proficiency with computing programming languages (C++ and python) required by start date.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: high-energy physics analysis, software development, and high-performance computing, track and vertex reconstruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in presentations and in written documents.
  • Experience in presenting scientific work through formal and informal reports and presentations; relevant publication record.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary will commensurate with experience. For information on UC benefits, please visit: http://hr.berkeley.edu/compensation- benefits/benefits
The chosen candidate will be appointed for two (2) years, with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing needs.
To apply, please submit a curriculum vitae, a brief research proposal (2 pages), a publication list of up to ten (10) relevant publications, including contributions for multi-author publications, and three (3) letters of recommendation.
All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality (http://apo.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html(link is external)) prior to submitting their letters.
The position will remain open until filled, but applications will be processed as they are received.

Diversity statement:
The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their work.

Family friendly statement:
UC Berkeley has an excellent benefits package as well as a number of policies and programs to support employees as they balance work and family
