Deadline on Mar 31, 2020
Job description:
The University of Minnesota Physics Department has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate to work on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
The CMS group at the University of Minnesota (Strobbe, Mans, Rusack) has leading roles in a variety of physics analyses, ranging from searches for new particles to precision measurements of the Higgs boson, as well as heavy involvement in the CMS endcap calorimeter upgrade project for the High-Luminosity LHC.
The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Prof. Nadja Strobbe, and is expected to be primarily based in Minneapolis, MN, with travel to Fermilab and CERN as needed. They are expected to take on a leading role in challenging new physics searches and will have the opportunity to develop machine learning tools. They will also be expected to make major contributions to the group's leading efforts in the design, construction and quality control of readout electronics for the CMS Endcap Calorimeter.
Primary duties:
75%: Research, divided approximately equally between data analysis and detector upgrades
10%: Supervision of graduate students and/or undergraduates participating in relevant research
15%: Communicating research to the broader community by writing papers, submitting them for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Giving presentations at universities, presenting results at domestic and international conferences, and participating in workshops.
Other duties of a similar scope as assigned.
The group is looking for an outstanding applicant who has obtained, or is about to obtain, a Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics.
Candidates should have a strong record of recent accomplishments in physics analysis.
Experience with detector electronics is a plus.
Online applications only will be accepted. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and statement of research interests to the University of Minnesota job portal, by clicking "apply for job" on https://hr.myu.umn.edu/jobs/ext/334787 .
In addition, applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to physics-cms-postdoc-search@umn.edu
The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
