Job description:
The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship position in Advanced Instrumentation. The position would involve work within a newly-forming consortium focused on the advancement of solid-state sensor design with an eye towards applications in a diverse set of fields, including nuclear and particle physics, accelerator physics and X-Ray imaging. Initial applications would be in the area of accelerator diagnostics for upgrades of existing facilities as well as the enabling of next-generation machines, particular proton sources and X-Ray free electron lasers (XFELs). The position will involve close collaboration with groups across the University of California system, including the Lawrence Berkeley and, in particular, Los Alamos National Laboratories.
The SCIPP laboratory on the UC Santa Cruz campus is home to a significant technical infrastructure and skilled staff, and is involved in world-class R&D on solid-state sensors and readouts, as well as large-scale production projects in support of the particle physics and cosmic ray and experimental cosmology communities. SCIPP is also host to smaller projects in a diverse set of fields, including earth science, proton tomography, and neurobiology, and a nascent but growing effort in X-Ray imaging and accelerator physics.
The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include sensor design and optimization through TCAD simulation, electronics and readout development, and both laboratory-bench and test-beam based characterization. Applicants with (expected) doctoral degrees in physics (including accelerator physics), materials science, electrical engineering or fields related to the development of advanced instrumentation are encouraged to apply.
